2 Who is Sherlock Holmes? As you watch the video clip, jot down words and phrases you would use to describe Sherlock Holmes. Record your observations and conclusions about his character, personality, mannerisms, etc., in the silhouette. ?

3 What do you know about Sherlock Holmes?
When we say the name Sherlock Holmes, what comes to mind?

4 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes is not a real person!
The man behind the legend is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. As you watch the video, on the half sheet, record at least three things you learn about Doyle.

5 “The Adventure of the Speckled Band”
As we study Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” we will be following a specific format. We will be reading the story in three parts and in three different ways.

6 Part One We will read the text together as a class.
During our class time reading, we will pause throughout to ensure understanding and discuss major themes and content. At the end of Part One, you will complete questions with a partner, and then we will review them as a class.

7 Part Two You will read the text independently.
After you finish reading, you will answer questions with a partner.

8 Part Three You will read the text independently.
You will then answer questions on your own. Your answers to these questions will count as a summative assessment, while the previous sets of questions will be entered as formative scores.

9 Vocabulary Expectations
Each part of the text will have a vocabulary activity to complete. Some of the tasks may include but are not limited to multiple meaning words, life application, synonyms and antonyms. We will have class time allotted for vocabulary work, but the activity will be due at the end of each part. These tasks will be scored for accuracy and entered as formative grades. You will have a summative completing the sentence quiz at the end of our text study.

10 Culminating Activities
As a way to wrap up our “Speckled Band” unit, you will participate in station activities. Stations include: Vocabulary in Real Life Analyzing Suspense Type of Mystery Characterization Thrills and Chills Additional Vocabulary Application
