States Of Matter K 2.1 Solids
2
Solids Matter-anything that takes up space and has mass.
States of matter-matter is either in a solid, liquid, gas phase Atom-smallest particle that makes up matter. Kinetic Theory of Matter-Brownian motion
4
Solids All particles in objects are in constant, random motion.
Kinetic – motion Temperature affects the level of molecular motion. No molecular motion at absolute zero. Absolute zero is at 0OKelvin or OC
6
Solids At higher temperatures, atoms collide more often.
Crystalline solids-repeating geometric patterns. Non-crystalline-amorphous. Non-repeating patterns.
8
Liquids Liquids have surface tension.
Liquids have no definite shape but a definite volume. Surface-tension is caused by cohesive forces between molecules. Viscosity-resistance to flow
11
Gases Gas – matter that doesn’t have a definite shape or a definite volume. Gas would fill a container completely. Vapor – matter that is in a gas state but generally a liquid or solid at room temperature
