Periodic Table Notes #1 You need YOUR periodic table and the blank one. WCHS Chemistry
2
Periodic Table of Elements
Having a regular, repeating pattern
3
Dimitri Mendeleev (1869) Credited for coming up with the periodic table Arranged elements based on properties and increasing atomic mass! Left blank spaces for undiscovered elements and even predicted their properties!
4
Periodic Law THE ONLY THING WE CHANGED:
We now organize elements by # of protons Periodic Law Properties of elements change with increasing atomic number in a periodic way.
5
Blank Periodic Table Groups = vertical (up and down) columns
Elements have similar physical & chemical properties We will label “A” Groups with ROMAN NUMERALS!
6
I A VIII II A III IV V VI VII B
7
Blank Periodic Table Groups = vertical (up and down) colums
Elements have similar physical & chemical properties We will label “A” Groups with ROMAN NUMERALS! Periods = horizontal rows Follow a repeating pattern
9
Label your “good” periodic table now with period and group numbers :)
10
Metals Good conductors, shiny, malleable & ductile (<-- easily shaped) They GIVE AWAY their electrons easily.
11
Metals give e-
12
Non-Metals Poor conductors, dull, brittle (<--NOT easily shaped) Notice that Hydrogen is a non-metal They TAKE electrons from other elements
13
Non-Metals take e- Metals give e-
14
Metalloids (“Staircase”)
Have properties of both metals and non-metals.
15
Non-Metals take e- Metals give e- Metalloids
