1 Figurative Language Presentation
Figurative Language Presentation Writers use figurative language- expressions that are not literally true- to create original descriptions.

2 What will we cover? In this lesson, we will learn about metaphor, simile, imagery, personification and symbolism.  All of which we will be actively using while writing our narrative essay.

3 What do you already know about metaphor, simile, imagery, personification and symbolism?
Take a few moments, and in your notebooks, define in your own words, or with examples, metaphor, simile, imagery, personification and symbolism.

4 Her mind is a sponge that absorbs all the details.
METAPHOR A metaphor is a comparison of two things NOT using like or as.   Her mind is a sponge that absorbs all the details. =

5 SIMILE A simile is a comparison of two things USING like or as. His mind is like a sponge absorbing all the details. IS LIKE A

6 IMAGERY In literature, imagery involves one or more of your five senses (hearing, taste, touch, smell, sight). An author uses a word or a phrase to stimulate your memory of those senses.

9 Example: The trees danced in the wind.
PERSONIFICATION Personification is giving human-like attributes or personal nature to inanimate or non-human things.   Example: The trees danced in the wind. A tree is an inanimate object that may sway in the wind, but it cannot get up and dance.

10 Symbols make works deeper, richer, more meaningful and colorful.
SYMBOLISM A symbol is an object or thing that stands for something else and can have multiple meanings. Symbolism consists of using a single object within a story that stands for something else. Symbolism may be obvious or more subtle or hidden so that the reader must really think and study the work to grasp the author's true meaning.   Symbols make works deeper, richer, more meaningful and colorful.
