Canadian Challenges War at Sea, Air, Trench Warfare, Ypres, Somme
Vimy under the command of a Canadian Major-General, Arthur Currie “the slaughter of the Somme had taught the Allied Commanders some important lessons, they began to change their tactics…” Creeping Barrage, long, detailed preparation in England, full scale models Canada was very successful- 11, 285 men died but the ridge was captured- France dedicated the ridge to Canada as a memorial park

Passchendaele Near Ypres, Belgium- constant shelling and heavy rains- no mans land was a mud pit Haig orders Currie and the Canadians to turn to Passchendaele- Currie strongly objects Same preparations as Vimy- result was 15, 654 casualties Little military significance to this battle- remains a part of Canadian history, but what part exactly is up for debate

Armistice Nov Germany and the Allies agree to an armistice- not a peace treaty or a surrender, an agreement to stop fighting 1919 Paris Peace Conference- representatives of the allies met in Paris to negotiate treaties and officially end the war- Canada was invited as a distinct delegation separate from Britain David Lloyd George, George Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson (huh??) The Treaty of Versailles- imposition of harsh conditions on the losers of the war- Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire- see map
