4 Earliest certifications and organization
1538- Nicholas Wynman Wrote the first book that taught various swimming techniques. 1603- Japan creates the first swimming organization. 1708-China establishes the first known lifesaving group, “Chinkiang Association for the Saving of Life.”

5 Present Day Today, most certifications and qualifications for lifeguarding are under the direction of the American Red Cross American Red Cross Founded by Clara Barton in 1881 Washington D.C.
