1 Marvellous Motion Episode 1 1

2 How fast? On your marks… Get set… GO!
Watch the ‘Go Go Go Challenge 2’ video clip. 2

3 Objective In this episode you are going to find out about speed and how can it be measured. 3

4 Measuring speed What two things do you need to measure in order to calculate the speed? 4

5 Speed in Nature I have a top speed of 10 metres per second.
Catch me if you can! 1.1 5

6 Nature’s Fastest Catch me if you can!
Match the animals to their top speeds. Then sort them into 2 groups- those that can catch me and those that cannot. 1.1 6

7 Catch me if you can! 7 7

8 Graphs are a great way of sharing information with other people.
1.2 8 8

9 Distance- Time Graphs Here are some data for two cars driving between two points. Draw a graph and display this data on it. You will then have two lines on your graph. Label your graph. Car 1 Time (s) 1 2 3 4 5 Distance (m) 10 20 30 40 50 Car 2 Time (s) 1 2 3 4 5 Distance (m) 12 22 34 50 9 9

10 Distance-Time Graph In small groups, discuss what you can tell about how the two different cars are moving. Which car would have an easier distance to predict at 6 seconds? What does the steepness of the line of the graph tell you? Write a sentence describing each of the lines on your graph. 10

11 Investigating Parachutes
Resisting the force of gravity You will need: Scissors Cotton Thread Plastic Sheets Paperclips Stopwatch Measuring Tape Sticky Tape 1.3 11 11 11 11

12 Investigating Parachutes
Making your first parachute Cut a 20cm square out of the plastic sheet. Use the tape to attach four threads, each 30cm long, to the corners of the square. Bundle the loose ends of the threads together and tie them together around a paperclip. 12 12

13 Investigating Parachutes
Working with a partner, find out how long it takes for your parachute to fall 2 metres. Repeat this five times, recording each result, then calculate the average. Make a different parachute, repeat the experiment and compare your results with those of the first parachute. Things you could change include: size of the parachute, shape of the parachute, holes in the parachute, different material, number of paperclips used Show your results in a graph. 2 metre floor 13

14 Investigating Parachutes (Continuation)
You are going to make a third and final parachute. This time you are going to make a prediction before testing your parachute. Note down what you are going to alter, and what you expect to happen. Carry out your experiment, then record and display your results. Was your prediction correct? Explain what you found out. 2 metre floor 14
