Motion is one of the key topics in physics.

4. What is Motion? Everything in the universe moves.
Relative motion: when you compare the motion of something to its surroundings. (ALL MOTION is relative!)

Ex. The earth is moving relative to the stars around it.
Ex. The car was moving 65 mph relative to it’s surroundings

7. What are some key words used when we describe motion?
Distance: The space that an object travels between two points
Displacement: How far you are from your starting point (INCLUDES DIRECTION)

8. What are some key words used when we describe motion?
Speed: the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time
Most objects do not travel at a constant speed (same speed over a period of time)

9. What are some key words used when we describe motion?
Equation:
Average speed = TOTAL distance/TOTAL time
The metric units of speed include: m/s (meters per second), km/hr (kilometers per hour)
In the US, we use mph (aka miles per hour or mi/hr)

Velocity: quantity that tells us the speed AND direction of an object
Gives us a more complete description of motion than just speed

11. What are some key words used when we describe motion?
The equation for velocity is the same as for speed, but you would also include the direction of motion
EXAMPLES
The car was moving at 65 mph (speed)
The car was moving west at 65 mph (velocity)
Or the car was moving 65mph 
