LHC plans for LS2 and beyond
Selected points from October 2018 RRB
2
The Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) Perform major Maintenance and Consolidations
Increase intensity/brightness in the injectors to match HL-LHC requirements (LIU Project) Increase injector reliability and lifetime to cover HL-LHC run (until ~2035) closely related to consolidation programs (in synergy with LIU Project) Anticipate HL-LHC work LS2 Slide from Frédérick Bordry
3
Run 3 running conditions
Still many unknowns E.g. experiment planned trigger rates are tbd We now assume that 2021 will be a relatively light year of data taking Not a full year, ramp up of LHC, etc. Our current “best guess” assumptions: 2021: x 2018 resources : 1.5 x 2018 resources Based on total integrated Luminosity to be attained during the run, with most delivered in Slide from Frédérick Bordry and Ian Bird RRB; 30 October 2018 Ian Bird
4
Successful Run 1 and Run 2 : > 189 fb-1 Run 3 at 14 TeV
End of 2023 : ~350 fb-1 => HL-LHC installation during LS3 ( ) Slide from Frédérick Bordry
5
HL-LHC: Civil Engineering Pt 1 and Pt5 has started
Slide from Frédérick Bordry
6
HL-LHC first stone ceremony, 15th June 2018
Point 1 Point 5 Slide from Frédérick Bordry
7
WLCG activities beyond operations
DOMA (Data Organisation, Management, Access) Caching – mostly Xcache 3rd party transfers w/o GridFTP QoS Costs modelling Technology and market tracking AAI – around tokens Infosys evolution IRIS-HEP: a US project, $25M for 5 years, core s/w for HL-LHC ESCAPE: a EU project for particle physics and astronomy infrastructures, includes data infrastructure
8
ALICE and ATLAS resource requirements
Updated upwards disk requirements for 2020 Run 3 – an increase of 2 orders of magnitude in event rate and a factor of 5 in data volume Increase of tape usage and dramatic changes in the workflow ATLAS: Almost no increase in 2020 Difficult to quantify the needs for 2021, 50% increase w.r.t is expected, with further increases for the rest of Run 3
