2 Large Area Sensor Networks for Environmental Monitoring
Prof. Hans-Erik Nilsson

3 Global warming

4 Large area technology large area sensing and imaging will provide
new measurement tools for sustainable industrial development and growth a technology base for future global awareness services directed towards environmental and consumer related issues

5 Technology of the future
The constant pressure for more efficient industrial processes in order to stay competitive on a global market drives the development of sensor technology. Yesterday, the driving force was primarily internally motivated by the need to reduce costs and increase quality. Today, external considerations are growing in importance and the competition between brand names demands an active role in driving global policies for security, environment and political stability. A large part of the sensor technology used in consumer products today was developed to satisfy yesterdays industrial needs i.e. digital cameras, MEMS solutions for accelerometers and gyroscopes, sensors for positioning and interactivity etc. Today’s industrial need is wider and tomorrow’s industrial sensor technology will be even more suited for global services on a consumer market.

6 Sensor technology for the information society
Geographical data package into a IT service

7 The next step - climate Geographical data combined with sensor data
Simulation models and sensor data may be used to predict the future

8 Power supply Distributed sensing demands distributed power supply
Data communication is wireless Power supply by battery or directly generated from the environment around the sensor Robust and environmentally friendly small scale energy production is demanded in order to employ distributed sensor networks at large scale

9 Electric power supply Three levels Power line infrastructure
Large power levels, power distribution over cable network, expensive infrastructure Backup power systems Medium sized power levels, power generated locally to ensure functionality when the power line is down Small scale power generation Private usage, summer houses, mobile homes, power supply to base stations for telecommunication, water pumps etc We believe that this market will increase

10 Generic knowledge? Power line systems Backup power system
Small scale applications Tiny power supplies* Wind mills Yes Geothermal Maybe Battery No Solar cells Hydroelectric Piezoelectric * Tiny power supplies are intended to replace batteries in wireless systems

11 Why work on the small scale?
Will future energy production utilize ’the Internet paradigm’ Local generation and storage of value Distribution of value using the network Flexibility to both feed and to draw value from the net Local generation of energy will grow by itself, but it will boom if the power net would follow ‘the Internet paradigm’

12 Spin-off from research on large area sensor networks for environmental monitoring
Energy efficient systems with low power signal processing Sensor technology for future remote presence in multimedia Technology for small scale energy production Large Area Sensor Networks for Environmental Monitoring New measurement tools for environmental studies Infrastructure for alarm functions for forest fires, radioactive pollution, extreme climate changes, etc

13 What if … The Mid-Sweden large scale sensor network for environmental monitoring Test-bed for large area sensing Multidisciplinary research initiative High resolutions study of the health state of forest and mountains in the Mid-Sweden region New sensor and measurement technology Basic and applied research in natural sciences Evaluation and testing of wireless technology platforms for large area surveillance systems Efficient data communication and signal processing Research on digital security and data integrity Robustness of wireless systems Technology for small scale energy production Energy harvesting technologies Optimization and test of small scale energy production solutions such as wind mills, geothermal, solar cell solutions Gaining real life experience of different alternative energy sources Sensor and web technology Communication and marketing of our natural resources Web services supporting global awareness Live documentation of global worming effects in our region (support education and public debate)
