DEFINE PATROL A detachment sent out by a larger unit to conduct a specific combat, reconnaissance, or security mission organization, not mission require specific task and purpose

PURPOSE OF PATROLLING Gather Information on enemy, terrain, or populace Regain contact with enemy or adjacent friendly forces Engage enemy in combat to destroy or inflict losses Reassuring or gaining trust of local populace Prevent public disorder Deterring or disrupting insurgent or criminal activity Providing unit security Protecting key infrastructure or bases

PRINCIPLES OF PATROLLING
PLANNING plan and prepare to a realistic standard, rehearse everything RECONNAISSANCE confirm what you think you know, learn that which you do not already know SECURITY ‘nuff said! CONTROL ability to bring every man and weapon available to overwhelm the enemy at the decisive point COMMON SENSE Use all available information and good judgment to make sound, timely decisions

PATROL BASE Stop all movement to avoid detection
Hide during a long reconnaissance of an objective Weapons/equipment maintenance mess and rest Prepare and issue orders Reorganize after infiltration into an enemy area Base from which to conduct consecutive/concurrent operations Occupied for no more than 24 hours Never use same location twice Map Recon and alternate location

PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS
Establishment of and commo with observation posts Defense of the patrol base Alert plan Withdrawal from the patrol base (routes, rally points, alt PB) A security system to make sure that specific soldiers are awake at all times Enforcement of camouflage, noise, and light discipline The conduct of required activities with minimum movement and noise
