Here is your ideal map. It is 1000 feet from the sidewalk in front of Little to the steps of Gorgas Library. That 1000 feet – the dashed line - represents 100 % of all the wealth in the US. By drawing 4 lines across the dashed line, you can show what percentage of all the wealth in the United States you think should belong to each wealth quintile of people. How big a section of this line do you believe: The least wealthy 20% should have? The next least wealthy 20%? The middle 20%? The next wealthy 20%? The wealthiest 20%? Where would you put your lines?

Here is your real map. Imagine the dashed line represents 100% of all wealth every American has. By drawing 4 lines across the dashed line, you can show what percentage of all the wealth in the United States belongs to each quintile of earners. How big a section of this line do you think: The least wealthy 20% have? The next least wealthy 20%? The middle 20%? The next wealthy 20%? The wealthiest 20%? How much do you think the top 5% have? How about the top 1%?

Here is our map, with 2010 figures.
In our class of 36 students, 15 students would be sitting on the porch of Little – their net worth is too low to make it to the sidewalk. 7 students would be able to take one step into the grass. 7 students would be able to sit on the benches where the sidewalks meet. 3 students could cross University Boulevard. 2 students could go about 20 feet into the quad. 1 student could go as far as Nott Hall. 1 student could sit on the steps of Gorgas Library.
