Localized Electron Model
A molecule is composed of atoms bonded together to share valence electron pairs The shared electron pairs are localized between nuclei of paired atoms. Pairs of electrons are shared to lower the overall energy of the molecule compared to atoms in the free state.

Lewis Structures Determine the total number of valence electrons in the molecule. Form at least one bond between atoms in the molecule (a pair of electrons is a bond) Arrange the rest of the electrons (in pairs) to satisfy the octet rule or duet rule (for hydrogen). Watch for exceptions.
