10 The Treaty of Versailles (1919)
Article Effect on Germany 42 Germany could not build any fortifications on the left bank of the Rhine or 50 kilometers to the east of the Rhine. The Rhineland was demilitarized (no German troops in that area). 45 Germany had to give France the Saar Basin (coal). * In 1935 the people living in the Saar Basin voted to be governed by Germany. 51 Germany lost Alsace and Lorraine to France. 119 Germany had to give up her colonies. 156 Germany had to give up the Province of Shantung in China to Japan. 160 German army could not have more than 100,000 men. Germany was demobilized. 231 “War Guilt Clause” Germany is blamed for causing the war. 232 Germany must pay for damage done to civilian population and their property. Germany had to pay reparations (payments for damages) to Allied Powers. The Allies asked Germany to pay $33 billion dollars.
