The Life of Christ – Lesson 7
January 16, 2019 Matthew Chapters 5-7 Luke 6:20-49 The Life of Christ – Lesson 7 The Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 7:15-24 “He who does the will of My Father …” “… a wise man who built his house upon the rock”
2
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23
Context: Removing the log out of our eye. Asking, seeking, and knocking. Two gates, two ways, two groups, two destinies. False teachers – good and bad trees and fruit. What are the Lord’s expectations from this sermon?
3
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:43-49
What are we do to with the preaching of the gospel? Be in the audience - hear? (Luke 13:26) Acknowledge “good lesson”? (Discern truth; Ephesians 2:2) Be “amazed” (Verse 28) or some emotional responses? 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Or…
4
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:43-49
What are we do to with the preaching of the gospel? Handle accurately the word of God. (1 Timothy 2:15) Be steadfast and not be tossed here and there. (Ephesians 4:14) Grow strong and be transformed. (Romans 12:1-2)
5
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:43-49
What are we do to with the preaching of the gospel? Repent and bear fruit. Psalms 1:3; 92:12-14; Matthew 12:33; John 15:1-8 Put our hand to the plow and get to work. Luke 9:62; 1 Corinthians 15:58; Nehemiah 2:18; 4:6 Be a “doer.” James 1:21-26; Matthew 12:48-50
6
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:43-49
“Lord” – kurios, which means “he to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has the power of deciding; master, lord” (Thayer). Having power or authority. (Matthew 11:28-30) In Luke 6:46, Jesus forms this as a (very good) question, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not do what I say?”
7
“Not every one who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ …”, Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 6:43-49
“Practice lawlessness” – “the condition of one without law” (Thayer) “… its essential character … the rejection of the law, or will, of God and the substitution of the will of self.” (Vine)
8
“Did we not …”, Matthew 7:21-23
It’s not an issue of not doing anything … “At least we’re doing something …” Matthew 7:17, “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’” Did the ability to perform miracles ensure submission to the will of God? Mark 9:38; Matthew 10:1-8; John 17:12; 1 Corinthians 12:4- 11; 14:1-5; 26-34
9
“Shall enter the kingdom of heaven …”, Matthew 7:21-23
Recognizing Jesus’ lordship is simply not enough to “enter” His kingdom. Who will enter? “He who does the will of My Father who is in heaven …” Verse 24, “… hears these words … and acts upon them …” Remember … “blessed are the gentle/meek”
10
“… I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness”, Matthew 7:21-23
Our eternal destiny depends on being known by the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:19; Luke 13:25-28; Matthew 25:11-12 Matthew 10:33 – those whom Jesus will deny (Titus 1:16) “Knew” – intimate fellowship; John 10:14-15; 17:25; Philippians 3:10; Galatians 4:9 “Never”? As long as one practices “lawlessness.” Luke 13:25-28 – those who were in the presence of Jesus and taught by Him but weren’t ready.

Building our house Matthew 7:24-48; Luke 6:46-49
How is your “house” going to turn out? Will it be “well built” (Luke 6:48)? Will it stand or “fall”? Will it retain its integrity or “collapse”? “Fall” – 1 Corinthians 10:12; Hebrews 4:11) that leads to “ruin.” Address 1 Corinthians 3:10-11 – speaking of the foundation of Jesus Christ.
12
Building our house Matthew 7:24-48; Luke 6:46-49
What’s the same? House – same temporal life. Heard the same words of Jesus – not a matter of one man listening to Jesus and another listening to someone else. Romans 10:17; Galatians 3:1-5; Hebrews 3:7, 15 Same “flood” and “torrent” that “burst against it” by Satan. (cf. Revelation 12:15-16)
