Genetics Activities

The gene A called “albinis” makes the protein melanin
The gene A called “albinis” makes the protein melanin. An individual who is homozygous recessive for this gene A cannot make melanin and so will have albinism. Knowing this information, write down the genotypes of the father, the mother and their children for each of the following situations. 1. Both parents have normal phenotypes, some but not all of their children have the albino phenotype Mother: Father: Children who have albinism: Children who do not have albinism 2. Both parents and all of their children have the albino phenotype 3The mother does not have albinism, the father has the albino phenotype, one child is unaffected and the other child has the albino phenotype This activity is out of 10 pts. We are doing selective grading. They all get 7 pts to start with and depending on the answers below they can get a maximum of 10 pts For question 1, only grade the children who do not have albinism: Ans is AA or Aa. If they have only one of the genotypes down, then they don’t get any points For question 3, the mother’s genotype is Aa (1 pt) and unaffected child is Aa (1 pt)

Two people heterozygous for Tay-Sachs (recessive disease) have two children who are both normal. What are the chances of them having a Tay-Sachs child for the third and fourth pregnancy. Suppose that two people with blood type AB conceived a child. What blood types could that child possibly have? Is there any blood type their children could never have? Use a Punnett square to predict the most likely blood type among their offspring The love of your life has a brother with fish odor syndrome (recessive disease), something no one in your own family has ever had. What are the chances that your children will smell like their uncle? This activity is out of 10 pts. Everybody gets 6 pts and then depending on the answers below they can get a maximum of 10 pts Chances of third child having Tay Sachs: 25% (1 pt); chances of fourth child having tay sachs: (1 pt) Child could never have : Type O (1 pt) Chances your child will have fish odor: zero % (1 pt). Here you assume you are FF (because no one in your family has the disease) and you assume your lover is Ff (although he does not exhibit symptoms he might be a carrier as it runs in his family).

Individual Activity (5 pts)
The following pedigree follows a sex linked recessive trait. Circle all of the persons you are certain are carriers. Carriers are people who carry the allele but show/express no symptoms. Hint: Only 4 people Please tell them that they are supposed to circle only 4 people. Everybody gets 1 pt and then depending on the right one circled they get additional points for a total of 5 pts.
