5. Riley was a teacher of Art from 1957-1958.
Born in Norwood, South London in In Cornwall she had freedom to play on the cliffs and beaches spending time watching the changing light, colour and cloud formations.

She began her Op Art paintings, working only in black and white using simple geometric shapes. Her work was based on optical effects which was instinctive and not based on theory.
Drawing and painting became the centre of her life from an early age studying at Cheltenham Ladies College, Goldsmiths College in London and then the Royal College of Art.
BRIDGET RILEY
Her paintings came to International notice when she exhibited alongside Vasarely in ‘The Responsive Eye’ exhibition in 1965.
Op Art became a major part of the swinging 60’s and influenced fashion, design and advertising.
After leaving the Royal College in 1955 she returned to Lincolnshire to look after her injured father. Lots of different family problems led to her having a complete physical and mental breakdown at this time. 5

A group of 12 students will have the opportunity to learn how to use Photoshop on the Apple Mac computers to create an Opie inspired ICT portrait.
When one student finishes, another one will begin until all students have done this piece of work. 7

8. Whilst this is taking place the rest of the group will be creating some DESIGN IDEAS
50 minutes
You will be given a small black and white photocopy of your line Opie portrait drawing.
You will apply a thin layer of graphite to the back and turn it back over.
Place this on your sketchbook page and draw around your outlines to transfer the image. Do this another two times on the same page.
Now using your colour geometric patterns prep work, think about how you will create your own repeating pattern design which might relate to something about you.
Change each design with different shapes and colours.
You could also include various colour scheme ideas at the side of each individual design. 8

9. PREP.WORK
Complete your 3 design ideas ensuring you have added colour to the backgrounds and also to your portrait.

10. 5 minutes
Turn to the back of your sketchbook and thinking about the learning objectives from the start of the lesson, tick each statement that you feel confident you have learnt. Now at the right-hand side, write down one specific thing that you have learnt today that you didn’t know before.
