3 Checking in How are you all now that you are in the last weeks of the trimester? Discussion Board posts Department name (Edit in View > Header and Footer)

4 Assessment Two Title: Written Essay Due Date: Week 12 – October 4th, – 4.00 pm Weight: 50% Marked out of: 50 Word Count: 1800 words Task Description: This task requires students to research a mental health condition to attain an understanding of some of the disorders a service user accessing a mental health service may present with. The task is divided into two parts - Part One and Part Two. 3005HSV

5 Assessment Two cont… Part One: (900 words) - Choose one of the three mental health conditions listed below and respond to subsequent questions. Borderline Personality Schizophrenia Bipolar Disorder How is this disorder defined in the DSM V? How is this condition diagnosed? (name examples of assessment tools if any) What is the usual treatment? What are the risk factors of that mental health condition? What are the psychosocial concerns experienced by persons with this condition? (include all aspects of the psychosocial domain) Explain how persons with this condition might be stigmatised and/or discriminated against in at least two areas of their life. 3005HSV

6 Unpacking the questions
How is this disorder defined in the DSM 5? How is this condition diagnosed? (name examples of assessment tools if any) You will need to undertake research and identify the correct assessment tool/s. You have learnt about the some of these already in the course content. What is the usual treatment? You will need to research what is the usual treatment for this condition – e.g medication, (you do not need to know all the names of the medications, but indicate medications such as ‘anti-psychotic’ medication. Name what therapeutic techniques are usually offered – e.g Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (example only) 3005HSV

7 Unpacking the questions cont..
What are the risk factors of that mental health condition? This question is quite explicit as it is. Perhaps you could include some statistics here (e.g suicide risk). Can you think of other risks besides suicide? What are the psychosocial concerns experienced by persons with this condition? (include all aspects of the psychosocial domain) The psychosocial domains would be: psychological (thoughts/beliefs about their condition), emotional (feelings they are experiencing), social, spiritual (includes existential factors) and cultural. This is a significant section – you will need to consider each domain carefully (worth 10 marks) 3005HSV

8 Unpacking the questions cont….
Explain how persons with this condition might be stigmatised and/or discriminated against in at least two areas of their life. This question is also very explicit. I am concerned that giving you examples might be a little ‘too helpful’. I will leave this section for you to consider without a prompt. 3005HSV

9 Part Two Part Two: (900 words) – Describe the biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model with use of relevant references. Hypothetically place yourself in the position of the person with the mental health condition. If you were engaged with a mental health service that was based on a biomedical model, how would this be experienced by the service user? What would be the areas of focus during the assessment and intervention phases? Now consider the same situation, however, the service user is engaged with a service that is based on a biopsychosocial model. How would this be experienced by the service user? Compare and contrast the two models through the perspective of a service user. 3005HSV

10 For you to consider re: Part Two
Please ensure you explore the literature well on the two models – the biomedical model and biopsychosocial model. Your reading list can be a start. You will need to have a good understanding of the two models and what their focus in order to undertake Part Two effectively. You can refer back to the content in Topic One and my lecture notes for Topic One to assist, if you wish. 3005HSV

11 Unpacking Part Two questions…..
What would be the areas of focus during the assessment and intervention phases? Although you have hypothetically placed yourself in the position of someone living with your chosen disorder, you need to ensure you write your response in the third person. An example would be: “A person with Schizophrenia undergoing an assessment in a service that has adopted a biomedical model will experience ……….” Base your response on what you have learnt from the literature about the biomedical model. Or you might refer to your person as “Client A”. Just ensure you state in your introduction that you will be referring to your client in Part Two as “Client A”. Then you would write something like: “If Client A was attending an assessment in a service that ……..” Repeat this process referring to literature on the biopsychosocial model 3005HSV

12 Unpacking Part Two…. Compare and contrast the two models through the perspective of a service user. Once you have explored the experience of a client accessing a service that has adopted the biomedical model and a service that has adopted the biopsychosocial model, you are now required to compare and contrast the two models. Ensure you highlight the similarities and the differences. Use compare and contrast language, such as – “Similarly” “In sharp contrast” etc. 3005HSV
