Science Course Description Class Expectations Be in your seat when the tardy bell rings. Bring all necessary supplies EVERY day. Follow teacher directions the first time they are given. Treat all peers, adults, and their belongings with respect. Act and speak appropriately, and assume accountability for your actions if you don’t. Obtain permission before leaving your seat, borrowing someone’s things, and speaking. Follow all BJH policies and procedures. Be READY! Be RESPECTFUL! BE RESPONSIBLE! Welcome to 8th Grade Science! Our goal is to master the 8th Grade Science concepts in order to prepare for greater academic success in high school and college. We will review concepts you have learned from previous grades and learn new concepts in 8th Grade. This class will be challenging and will require effort on your part. You will need to be PRESENT in class, be PREPARED with all necessary supplies, and PARTICIPATE daily. If you follow these three pieces of advice, you will be successful, not only in my class, but in other classes as well! What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, positive note to parents, tangible trinkets, and special class activities/privileges. What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder to student. 2. Student Conference: the teacher and student will agree on steps that will be taken to fix the problem. 3. Detention/Parent Contact: Parent will be included on process to fix issue. Student will stay after school for 30 min to make up missed instruction. 4. Referral to Administration: A student will be referred immediately for server behavioral problems. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? We will use CANVAS to store agendas, assignments, and additional resources. If you have any problems finding what you need come see me or me. (682)

Grade Scale What happens if I turn in an assignment late? A+ = 100% A = 94% - 99% A- = 90% - 93% B+ = 87% - 89% B = 84% - 86% B- = 80% - 83% C+ = 77% - 79% C = 74% - 76% C- = 70% - 73% D = 64% - 69% F = 0% - 63% Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late. If a student is absent on the date work is due, the assignment is due the first day the student returns to school. COMPLETED LATE WORK will only receive partial credit (70% of the assignment total). INCOMPLETE LATE WORK will not be graded and will result in a zero for the assignment. How will I check my grade in class? Grades are updated within a week of the assignment given and will be posted on SELF SERVE. I encourage students and parents to regularly check this for missing or failing grades, so they can be taken care of promptly. What do I do if I am absent? Always check CANVAS for notes, activities, and handouts for the day that you are absent. If you are absent, all assignments are due after the number of days that you were absent. I encourage you to schedule a day to attended tutoring so that I can support you through the content. Grade Breakdown Labs / Quizzes = 2 entries in gradebook Interactive Notebook = 2 entries in gradebook (graded on completeness & neatness) Daily Assignments = 1 entry in gradebook Tests / Projects = 3 + entries in gradebook. . Do I have to do homework? Homework is assigned occasionally and is expected to return the next day. SOME in class assignments will be assigned as homework if they are not completed in class. This does not apply to every assignment. What is an Interactive Student Notebook? The Interactive Notebook (IAN) is a portfolio of student work and notes. This is vital to our class as it will serve as our textbook. If the student does not keep up with and maintain their notebook properly, they will not be fully prepared for class and miss out on important opportunities. Notebooks will be graded once a six-weeks and will count 2 times in the gradebook. Supplies Pencils One pair of earbuds or headphones for Chromebooks Dedicated Spiral Glue Colored Pencils or Markers Highlighters Pair of scissors Ruler Some supplies are provided in class but they are limited.
