Small group of computers and peripherals linked together over a relatively small geographic area Computer lab at your school or the network serving the floor of the office building where you work is probably a LAN goldstein

4 Network types Wide Area Network (WAN)
Comprises large numbers of users over a wider physical area or separate LANs that are miles apart Use WANs to connect two or more geographically distant locations A college might have a west and an east campus located in two different towns goldstein

5 Network types Personal Area Network (PAN)
Devices used by one person connected via wireless media Usually by employees traveling on buissness goldstein

6 Network types Home Area Network (HAN)
A type of small LAN installed in home Not usually deployed by businesses, except small home-based businesses goldstein

7 Network types Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
WANs constructed by municipalities to provide connectivity in a specific geographic area Although not deployed by businesses, employees often use them while traveling goldstein

8 How do VPNs work? Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Uses the public internet communications infrastructure to build a secure, private network among various locations. Special security technologies and protocols that enhance security, enabling data to traverse the internet as securely as if it were on a private leased line. goldstein
