How To Be A More Perceptive Driver
Media & Quiz Project – Cheryl Butler
2
Localizing and customizing driver education materials is essential in developing awareness, problem solving and mental rehearsal. With the technology and means to create our own software materials we have a reason to explore and develop materials that are meaningful. This can also lead to projects where students can help you create and add local traffic pictures to your file so that you can use these in your classwork. Objective
3
Customizing materials can help make a program more interesting and useful for students. It is important to be able to identify local problem areas and use recognizable traffic situations to analyze and develop problem solving skills in your area. Your task for this project will be to utilize your camera and google maps to create a slide show/power point quiz with traffic images. Assignment
4
10 Traffic Images - Five that are taken in and or around your community and five that you screenshot from google maps. Create a Power Point Presentation using your images. Come up with True/False question(s) or a Multiple Choice question for each slide. Requirements
5
The following images are from Otsego, Delaware, and Chenango counties which locals lovingly refer to as the Tri-County area. Unadilla, NY
6
Traffic control signals are devices placed along, beside, or above a roadway to guide, warn, and regulate the flow of traffic, which includes motor vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and other road users. Traffic Signals
7
Traffic Signals Flashing Red Light Question 1: True or False A flashing red signal light means exactly the same as a stop sign: STOP! After stopping, proceed when safe and observe the right-of-way rules.
8
Traffic Signals Green Arrow Question 2: True or False A green arrow means you have the right of way to proceed along your route upon the turn of the light.
9
Traffic Signals Pedestrian Question 3: True or False If the word “WALK” or a white walking person appears in a pedestrian signal it is legal to start crossing.
10
Traffic signs are divided into three basic categories: Regulatory, Warning, and Guide Signs. The shapes and colors of signs indicate the type of information a sign will contain. Traffic Signs
11
Traffic Signs Railroad Crossing Question 4: True or False The yellow and black colors, and the round shape of the sign on the left indicate this type of sign as a regulatory traffic sign.
12
Traffic Signs Service Signs Blue traffic signs give information about motorist services along the roadway such as rest areas, hospitals, gas stations, restaurants, and lodging. Question 5: True or False The service sign in the picture to the right indicates gas available at the next exit.
13
Traffic Signs Warning Signs Many road signs warn you to slow down or watch for hazards or special conditions ahead. Most warning signs are yellow, diamond shaped, with black letters or symbols. One common warning sign is in the slide to the left. Question 6: True of False The arrow in the warning sign indicates a sharp turn in the road in the direction of the arrow. The 25mph sign below the warning sign is a mandatory speed limit.
14
Traffic Signs Guide Signs Guide signs provide directional and mileage information to specific destinations. They can be rectangular or have other shapes. Route signs mark federal interstates, state highways, and county or municipal roadways. Question 7: True or False The interstate system uses a shield symbol that is blue on the bottom and has a red band across the top.

Right-of-way rules help people drive safely
Right-of-way rules help people drive safely. These rules go along with courtesy and common sense. Bicycle riders, moped riders, and pedestrians must follow these rules as well. Right of Way
16
Right of Way Stop One Side of Intersection Question 8: True or False You have to remain stopped until all cross traffic is gone. So, in the given situation, the white car can not make a left turn until the blue car gets out of its way.
17
Right of Way Four Way Stop Question 9: True or False At a four-way stop if two vehicles reach the intersection simultaneously, the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.

Defensive Driving - SIPDE
Gathering information with your eyes is called visual perception. Safe driving depends on your ability to notice many things at once. To get the right information to the brain, a drivers eyes have to move constantly and pick out the appropriate spots at the right time. Defensive Driving - SIPDE
19
SIPDE Scanning the Road Look ahead for signs of trouble. Watch the brake lights of cars both ahead of you and in other lanes. Start braking early if you see traffic ahead of you slowing down. Also check the space between your car and any vehicles in the lane next to you. Use your rearview mirror and side view mirrors every three to five seconds. Question 10: True or False In order to avoid last minute moves and spot possible traffic hazards, you should always look down the road ahead of your vehicle.

Answer Key Question 1: True – A flashing red signal light means exactly the same as a stop sign: STOP! After stopping, proceed when safe and observe the right-of-way rules. Question 2: True - A green arrow means go, however first you must yield to any vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian still in the intersection. The green arrow pointing left in this example allows you to make a protected turn; oncoming vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians are stopped by a red light as long as the green arrow is lit.
22
Answer Key Question 3: True – If in white the word “walk” or an image of a white “walking person” appears it is legal to cross. Question 4: False – Regulatory signs are a variety of shapes; but are always red, white, black, or any combination of the three. Question 5: True – The word “Gas” is indicated as well as a picture indicating the service station company.
23
Answer Key Question 6: False – 25mph is a suggested speed for that sharp turn in the road in the direction of the arrow. If you are ever driving on that road I strongly suggest you slow down to at least that! Question 7: True – Question 8: True – In some places you will find stop signs on one side of the intersection but no signal control for the cross traffic as shown in both pictures.
24
Answer Key Question 9: True – At a four-way stop if two vehicles reach the intersection simultaneously, the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right. Question 10 : True – When you are looking far enough ahead in your travel path, you will be able to spot hazards early and you will be prepared to react to them.
