3. The Mouth: Lying
Jas 3:2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. 5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

6. The Evil of Lying
Lying Intent and purpose to deceive Deception for malicious intent It is not lying: To be wrong To change your mind Teasing / joking / hyperbole
Consider:
God does not lie but:
He permits a delusion
He does not reveal all things
This is God’s prerogative; by definition, it is not lying

8. Lying to God
Ananias - Acts 5:1-4 Attempting to appear righteous Lying to the church = lying to God When we lie to God we ALWAYS are caught

9. Lying to Yourself
The denial of our sins, both past and present If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8

12. Lying to Yourself
Believing we have amounted to much for God For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Galatians 6:3

13. Lying to Yourself
Believing we are wise due to worldly wisdom Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 1 Corinthians 3:18

14. Lying to Others
Lying: A despicable abomination to God Leviticus 19:11 Proverbs 12:22 Ephesians 4:25 Colossians 3:9
Le 19:11 'You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.
Pr 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.
Pr 6:16 There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Eph 4:25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE OF YOU WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.

15. Lying With Good Intent
But what about “white lies”? - Lies with good intentions? ALL liars are cast aside by God – Revelation 21:8 Many sins are done with good intentions - Uzzah and the ark – 2 Samuel 6:6
Job 31:29 "Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy, Or exulted when evil befell him? 30 "No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By asking for his life in a curse.
Pr 24:17 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; 18 Or the LORD will see it and be displeased, And turn His anger away from him.
Ob 1:12 "Do not gloat over your brother's day, The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of Judah In the day of their destruction; Yes, do not boast In the day of their distress.

16. Lying With Good Intent
"Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent” Acts 17:30
There are instances where approved people in the OT lied (Jacob, Israelite midwives, Rahab). It does not mean their lies were approved, but that God did not hold them accountable as He does us today

17. Speaking the Truth in Love
Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ Ephesians 4:15 Being honest, courteous and kind Bringing the whole truth – Acts 20:27
