The Five NJHS Pillars Character Scholarship Leadership Service
The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. Scholarship Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 90 percent meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration of the four pillars. Leadership Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable and exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Service This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community done without compensation and with a positive, courteous and enthusiastic spirit. Citizenship The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy. This student also demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations and school clubs.

Teacher Evaluation Each student’s academic and elective teachers from the present academic year will complete the evaluation form. Teachers will look at such things as: Sets positive example Shows positive attitude Works well with others Remains on task Consistently meets deadlines Accepts redirection All evaluation forms will then be submitted to the faculty council for thorough examination. The determination of members will result from this process.
9
Faculty Council Council is made up of 5 faculty members.
The council evaluates all forms submitted for consideration for NJHS membership. The faculty council analyzes the student’s information and teacher evaluations and determines a final decision.
10
Important Notes Sponsors facilitate the selection process but do not choose the members. A student who meets the high standards for NJHS membership is invited to join the organization. During the selection process, if a student does NOT uphold the membership requirements, then he/she will not advance. There is no minimum or maximum amount of NJHS members. However, this is not an “Honor Roll” club. Grades are only a portion of the membership requirement.
