2. Observations
Scientists record observations in journals or logs. Observations are never destroyed once recorded. 

3. There are 2 categories of observations
Qualitative - information gathered through the senses such as smell, taste, touch, hear, shape, etc.
Quantitative - information gathered due to precise measurements, such as height in cm, width in cm, mass in g, volume in cm3, density in g/cm3, time in seconds, speed in kph, etc.

4. Observations are organized in:
Data tables or charts.
Graphs are visual representations of the data so that it can be easily studied, interpreted, and analyzed. Circle, bar, and line are examples of kinds of graphs.

5. Experimental Variables:
Independent variable – the variable/idea that you change or manipulate in the beginning of the experiment (scientist controls)
Dependent variable – the variable that you observe or measure by the end of the experiment (in response to the IV)
constants– variables that are not allowed to change

7. What’s the difference between law and theory?
Theory- (best explanation)
uses many observations and has lots of experimental proof
flexible enough to be modified if new data/ proof introduced
theories cannot be proven- they can only be disproven
Examples of Theories:
Kinetic Theory of Matter
Atomic Theory
Germ Theory

8. Law- (continuous and universal)
stands the test of time, often without challenge
experimentally proven over and over
has uniformity and is universal

Law of Conservation of Energy
Newton’s Laws of Motion
Newton’s Laws of Gravitation
