3. Lesson Objectives At the end of the lesson, students can:

4. Foundational Definitions
Statistics: the science of data
Individuals: the objects described by a set of data. They may be people, animals, or things.
Variable: any characteristic of an individual. (A variable can take different values for different individuals.)
Example: Individual – Students at BHS

5. Types of Variables
A Categorical (Qualitative) variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories.
Example:
A Quantitative variable takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average.

6. Categorical (Qualitative)

7. Distributions
Distribution of a variable tells us what values the variable takes and how often it takes those values.
To Examine and Describe Data:
Examine each variable by itself first; then examine the relationship between variables
Graph the data; then add numerical summaries of the data
