Welcome to AP Statistics
2
Unit 1 – Day 1 Preliminaries
Introductions/ roll (any peanut allergies?) Textbooks Course expectations/ student info Course format How to be successful Honor Code
3
Lesson Objectives At the end of the lesson, students can:
Describe the distribution of a variable Determine types of variables Display variables graphically Describe the overall pattern of a distribution
4
Foundational Definitions
Statistics: the science of data Individuals: the objects described by a set of data. They may be people, animals, or things. Variable: any characteristic of an individual. (A variable can take different values for different individuals.) Example: Individual – Students at BHS Variables -
5
Types of Variables A Categorical (Qualitative) variable places an individual into one of several groups or categories. Example: A Quantitative variable takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average.
6
Categorical (Qualitative)
Types of Variables Place the following variables: Age College Choice Gender GPA Grade Level Phone Number Race Weight Categorical (Qualitative) Quantitative
7
Distributions Distribution of a variable tells us what values the variable takes and how often it takes those values. To Examine and Describe Data: Examine each variable by itself first; then examine the relationship between variables Graph the data; then add numerical summaries of the data
8
Displaying Distributions
Type of Variable Graphical Displays Numerical Summaries Categorical Pie Charts Bar Graphs Counts Percents Proportions Quantitative Dot Plots Stem Plots (Stem & Leaf) Box Plots (Box & Whisker) Histograms Center (mean, median, mode) Spread (range, standard deviation)
9
m&m Activity – Dot Plot I will give each student ~25 m&ms.
If you get more, cover your eyes and randomly remove candy until you have exactly 25 pieces. 2. Calculate the percentage of ORANGE pieces. 3. Come up to the back board and place a dot for your percentage.
10
Describing Distributions
**** Remember your SOCS!!! ***** Shape Outliers Center Spread

Homework Finish the M&M activity (to be collected)
Read Textbook pages 1-12 Do exercises p. 7/#2, 4, 6, 7, 8 And p. 22/#11, 13, 14, 17 Check answers to odd problems Bring a leaf next class. Review policies and procedures sheet with your parents and get it signed!
