1 Health 10/2/18

2 Organs of digestion Esophagus pushes the food along until it reaches the stomach. The stomach’s strong muscular walls churn the food to break it into smaller pieces and mix them with gastric juice: a mixture of acid and enzymes This process can take up to four hours. List of organs: Stomach: 5. Pancreas Small intestines 6. Villi The liver Gallbladder

3 How your organs work to remove waste:
Stomach: acid and enzymes break food down Small intestine: most of the digestive process takes place. Liver: body’s largest gland, secretes a liquid called bile that helps digest fats Gallbladder: store bile until its needed, bile is sent from the liver to the gallbladder. Pancreas: is a gland that helps the small intestine, by producing pancreatic juice. Villi: helps collect the nutrients into the bloodstream.

4 Digestive System

5 Removing waste: Some food that you eat may contain materials that the body cannot use. During the digestive process these substances are commonly called waste. Excretion: is the process by which the body gets rid of waste materials. Excretory System: is the system that removes waste from the body and controls water balance. Major organs in the excretory system are: kidney, bladder, and colon

6 3 Types of waste: The body produces 3 kinds of waste: Solids, liquids, and Gases Solids: made up of foods that your body cannot break down, including fiber After digestion the body sends a mixture of water and undigested waste into the colon- a storage tube for solid waste (also called large intestines) Most of the water is absorbed by the colon and returned to the body. Rest of material become feces and when the colon is full the muscles in the walls of the colon contract.

7 3 Types of waste Liquids: are produced by cell activity
Approximately % of your body is water Most waste material is dissolved in it. Figure 4.8 describes how the organs are involved. Gases: lungs get rid of carbon dioxide gas when you exhale.
