Duty-Free Allowances Duty-free goods are popular worldwide, since they can be purchased at a lower-than-usual price. However, did you know that duty-free allowances vary from country to country? For example, passengers who travel to Japan are allowed to bring up to three bottles of alcoholic beverages, whereas the allowance is only one liter in the case of the United States. In Europe, allowance is calculated based on alcohol by volume (ABV). Passengers are permitted to bring one liter of alcohol with an alcoholic content exceeding 22% volume, two liters of alcohol with an alcoholic content below 22% volume, or four liters of still wine. There are also different allowances for perfumes and cigarettes for different countries.
