A prospective, randomized trial of Unna's boot versus Duoderm CGF hydroactive dressing plus compression in the management of venous leg ulcers Paul R. Cordts, MD, Lawrence M. Hanrahan, MD, Agustin A. Rodriguez, MD, Jonathan Woodson, MD, Wayne W. LaMorte, MD, PhD, James O. Fig. 1 Comparison of healing rates of Unna's boot versus Duoderm with ulcer areas expressed as a percent of initial ulcer area. Because two patients on Unna's boot markedly deteriorated and one patient showed minimal improvement, standard errors for Unna's boot become quite large as one approaches 12 weeks. ANOVA reveals no significant difference in healing rates between the two groups (p = 0.90). Fig. 2 Linear regression analysis of weekly ulcer areas for a single patient. Slope of the best fit line of linear regression analysis represents average healing rate for this ulcer over the 12-week study period, i.e., 0.22 cm2 healed per week. Note excellent correlation coefficient in this case. Values for r ranged from 0.65 to 0.98. Fig. 3 Healing rates in square centimeters per week plotted as function of initial ulcer perimeter. For both groups a significant correlation occurred between healing rate in cm2/wk and initial ulcer perimeter (Duoderm p < ; Unna's boot p < 0.002).
