Describe an economic or political factor that drove Europe to imperialism: Europe needed new markets for its manufactured goods. European powers needed coaling stations to support merchants and assure their defense. Europe wanted to pursue resources that are scarce or nonexistent in Europe.

3 Notes: Social Darwinism
Social Darwinism is the belief that the theory of Evolution can also be applied to societies. It states that the best and most well-adapted societies naturally develop wealth and success through conflict with lesser societies.

4 The White Man’s Burden We are going to read part of a poem.
This poem was written by a British man (Rudyard Kipling) to warn America about the challenges of being an empire. Think about what this poem is saying the goal of imperialism is.
