1 End of the New Deal

2 New Deal Success What trends are evident?
When was unemployment the highest? When did the New Deal begin? What role did that have on unemployment? Why?

3 Roosevelt’s Re-Election
Roosevelt had seen success in the first term as President. Jobs were provided to thousands of Americans, but more work was still needed Unemployment decreased, personal incomes up Roosevelt overwhelmingly won re-election in 1936. Republican candidate, Alf Landon, only got 2 states Democrats also won more seats in Congress 1st election that a shift in African American voting occurred from Republican (Lincoln’s party) to the Democratic Party..

4 Court Packing Plan Frustrated with the Court and their dismissal of several New Deal Programs, Roosevelt planed to reorganize the courts New Plan: Give president power to appoint many new judges and expand the Supreme Court by up to 6 justices (14) Many saw this as a plan to ‘pack’ the Court with people he favored (and who favored the New Deal!) Stitch in time that saved nine! His new plan did not pass Congressional approval

5 Bad Year In the fall of 1937, the nation’s economy suffered another setback Began with a drop in the stock market By end of year, 2 million Americans lost their jobs Roosevelt had hoped to cut back on gov’t spending (a large deficit was growing), but the lose of jobs required more gov’t spending to help the unemployed..

6 1938- The End Loss of support 1938 Congressional Elections
1937 economic downturn Negativity that came along with Court Packing Plan Large group of Anti-New Deal Congressmen began to openly voice their objections 1938 Congressional Elections Republicans made tremendous gains in the election Roosevelt lost his majority and support to pass further New Deal legislation

7 Successes and Failures
Jobs Direct aid – social security, unemployment $ Confidence – FDIC, SEC, WPA built thousands of schools, hospitals, roads, murals, sculptures, etc. Failure Less success in economic recovery 1937 hurt the success numbers Roosevelt initially saw Temporary help Varied from state to state  amount of $ and discrimination

8 Role of Government New Deal increased the role of government in the lives of the people This new role of gov’t created a much larger gov’t – grew in size and scope New programs and agencies created Americans began to look directly to gov’t for help
