2 Use this powerpoint to provide explanations to 4-H members prior to the meetings.
This powerpoint may be useful for parents, teachers and 4-H members along with the handouts provided for each meeting.

3 What is Parliamentary Procedure?
First learn about how any club uses fair and organized ideas to keep order and accomplish goals. What is Parliamentary Procedure?

4 Parliamentary Procedure involves using generally accepted rules of order. It is respectful and orderly.

5 Basic Parli-Pro Words to Know
gavel (used by the presiding officer) call to order (opens meeting) minutes (written notes of meeting) motion (make a motion to take action) second (agree with the motion) discussion (if needed before voting) vote (to determine if motion passes or fails) adjourn (end the meeting)

6 Communications is about getting the point across
Communications is about getting the point across. It involves sending and receiving messages. Learning how to communicate is a lifeskill. This is a goal in 4-H.

7 Verbal – Visual – Written Communications
Good speaking and listening skills improve communication. “Connect” with your audience by holding their attention. How? Be heard Be expressive Make eye contact Use good posture Choose an interesting topic Be prepared

8 Verbal – Visual - Written
We communicate visually through art and design, using gestures or signals, and through photography and video. Draw attention to your visual. How? Use color Be creative Be neat Have a good message Be specific Be bold (we have to see it)

Written communication includes writing skills and reading skills. If you are writing to communicate, be understandable. How? Use correct spelling Use correct grammar Be specific Use details Be neat Have a clear cut message

10 Verbal Communication: 4-H Public Speaking Due at the 2nd Meeting
4th Grade The focus is delivery, getting up in front of a group and getting the point across. - Choose a 1 minute reading (poem, story, etc.) - Practice (know to pronounce all words, watch for punctuation.) 5th – 8th Grade The focus is writing a speech – include three main parts: * introduction (to give the topic and get the attention of audience) * body (think of 3 main points you want to make) * closing (wrap it up) Delivery still important! 5th – 8th Grade Choose any topic – but think about a persuasive speech. Local Club: 1-3 minutes County: 2-5 minutes 9th – 12th Grade Topic must be related to 4-H. Time: 2-7 minutes

11 Speaking and Speech Writing Tips
Put your speech on notecards - learn it Introduction could start with a topic-related story, a quote, startling statistics, etc. Use details in the speech, personal experiences, your own thoughts or concerns Relate the closing to the introduction Choose a topic that you care about – and show that care in how you give it

12 Visual Communication: 4-H Poster Art Contest Due at the 3rd Meeting
Rules: Topic is 4-H 14”x22” poster board Horizontal Include 4-H clover stem to the right not tilted Create a short catchy title Use color & artwork Tips: Lettering at least 1” tall Use bold markers Clipart is acceptable Stencils, stick-on letters, computer lettering or freehand is acceptable. Use color Do not: Use loose glitter Use vertical letters Stick anything on the poster that is over 1/8” thick Use well-known cartoon figures Small pictures that are hard to see.

13 Written Communication: 4-H Project Folder Due at the 4th meeting
4th Grade Keep up with your folder Be complete and neat Write your 4-H story in the Exploring Project Record and Matching Do the homework assignments: Let’s Decide, Communication, Design Careers, and TN Mammals) 5th – 8th Grade Keep up with your folder Be complete and neat Complete your project goals and record your proejct work (Use project record sheet) Complete the project activity page Add work to your folder Write your 4-H story 6th – 12th Grade May also complete a project portfolio for competition at the regional and/or state level. Interested students should content the 4-H agents for details and assistance.

14 Putting it all together: 4-H Demonstration
Due at the 4th meeting Giving a demonstration is a method of teaching others something you know about or know how to do Write out the steps on note cards Visuals: use props and posters to help you teach Verbally: give the demonstration in the club meeting 4th grade: any topic 5th grade: should be about their selected project

Don’t forget safety – what safety tips should you teach your audience on your topic A how-to demonstration is generally well-received If you need to give a list of materials, supplies or ingredients needed – list them on a poster and say them A title poster lets everyone know what you are teaching If you are not sure if you can bring items for your demonstration to school – ask your teacher!

16 A picture is worth a thousand words
The 4-H Photo Search Contest is another visual communication activity. Follow the rules – mounting the photo on 8 ½ x 11 cardstock or poster board and give it a caption. Remember – you take the photo anytime in the year.

17 Last Meeting Choices Choose one, two or three options.
Photo Search Many people take photos – but how good are they? - Choose your subject - Check out the back- ground - Be very still so you have a sharper image - Consider lighting - Take several Dairy Poster Not a 4-H contest, but another opportunity to practice poster art. There are cash prizes for state winners. The theme will be announced and must be used. 14”x22” poster board No 4-H on the poster Baking Following directions is a great lifeskill. Try it with a recipe. More tips and info, including recipes on the Robertson County website. 4th grade: cornbread 5th grade: muffins 6th grade: cookies 7th grade: quick loaf 8th grade: cupcakes 9 – 12th grades: yeast bread
