10 Skin cancer The three major types of skin cancer are:
Basal cell carcinoma Squamous cell carcinoma Melanoma

11 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

12 Basal Cell Carcinoma Basal cell carcinoma is the least malignant & most common skin cancer Epidermal bottom layer cells (Stratum basale) divide rapidly and invade the dermis & hypodermis Slow growing and do not often metastasize Can be cured by surgical excision (cut out) in 99% of the cases

13 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

14 Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma arises from keratinocytes of a deep layer of the epidermis Arise most often on scalp, ears, and lower lip Grows rapidly and metastasizes if not removed Prognosis is good if treated by radiation therapy or removed surgically

15 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

16 Melanoma Melanoma is cancer of melanocytes
Is the most dangerous type of skin cancer because it is: Highly metastic (spreads fast) Resistant to chemotherapy

17 Don’t forget to chunk your notes!

18 Characteristics of melanoma
Melanoma can be detected by using the ABCD Rule

19 Characteristics of melanoma
A: Asymmetry Two side do not match B: Border Has indentations C: Color Has several colors D: Diameter Larger than 6 mm * Some also use E: Elevation
