INTRODUCTION The Lighting Industry is diverse. The surge protection requirements vary depending on the application and the desired market, i.e. residential vs. commercial. Also, the safety agency (UL, ANSI, CSA, etc) testing requirements differ depending on the installation. Typical protection applications include: Photo Controls LED Drivers LED Arrays Fluorescent Ballasts Halogen Fixtures Traffic Lights For the protection of the products listed, Maida typically provides the following product lines: Standard Series HC Series MLV Series MPD Series

Common Testing Required for Lighting Products
1.2/50µS – 8/20 µS COMBINATION WAVE TEST SPECIFICATION Parameter Test Level / Configuration 1.2/50 µS Open Circuit Voltage Peak Typical: 6 kV Enhanced: 10kV Extreme: 20kV 8/20 µS Short Circuit Current Peak Typical: 3 kA Enhanced: 5kA Extreme: 10kA Consecutive Test Strikes 5 for each Coupling Mode and Polarity/Phase Angle combination Time Between Strikes 1 minute maximum between consecutive strikes The required coupling modes, polarity and phase angle, and DUT configuration is dependent on the type of DUT. The following requirements are for control devices. Coupling Modes* L1 to L2 Polarity and Phase Angle Positive at 90° and Negative at 270° DUT operational state Controlled device ON, Controlled device OFF Standard Life: Total Number of Strikes for devices 5 strikes x 1 coupling modes x 1 polarity/phase angle (Positive at 90°, controlled device maximum specified input voltage. With a second DUT, 5 strikes x 1 coupling modes x 1 polarity/phase angle (Negative at 270°, controlled device maximum specified input voltage. 10 total strikes, split between 2 DUTs. Long Life: Total Number of Strikes for devices Following a 60 minute maximum delay, using the same DUT, 5 strikes x 1 coupling modes x 1 polarity/phase angle (Negative at 270°, controlled device maximum specified input voltage. 10 total strikes on a single DUT. Maida Products – Recommended Lighting Applications
STANDARD SERIES VARISTORS UL1449, cUL, CSA, VDE approvals, RoHS/REACH Compliant, the Standard Series is our broadest and most comprehensive line of radial-leaded varistors. Available in sizes from 5mm to 25mm, and MCOV from 11VAC to 1000VAC (additional voltages available upon request). Designed to handle low and medium voltage. The Standard Series is recommended for use in the ANSI “Typical “, and possibly “Enhanced” test level/configuration. Can be used in the “Extreme” with proper parallel MOV configuration. Also, very commonly used in fluorescent ballast’s. Also used for supplementary protection in LED Drivers. HC SERIES VARISTORS UL1449, cUL approvals, RoHS/REACH Compliant, the HC Series is designed for pulse repetition and/or higher surge current environments. Typical uses are LED lighting, photo controls, GFCI / AFCI / LCDI applications. Available in sizes from 8mm to 25mm, and MCOV from 130VAC to 550VAC. The HC Series is recommended for use in all ANSI test level / configurations. The HC Series has widespread use in the Photo Control industry, primary LED Driver protection, and SPD modules for total lighting protection. MLV SERIES VARISTORS RoHS/REACH Compliant, the MLV Series is a surface mount, multilayer MOV. Designed to provide transient, and ESD protection in EIA 0402, 0603, 0805, 1210, 1812, 2220 chip sizes, and MCOV from 4VAC to 300VAC (additional voltages available upon request). The MLV Series is commonly used for LED Array protection. These are typically installed on the LED array itself. MPD SERIES UL1449 Type 4CA, cUL, a modular surge protective device, featuring an IP65 enclosure, utilizing thermal protection with MOV’s to provide a complete protection package. Can be connected in series or parallel with the load, operational indictor, and MCOV of 120VAC, 277VAC, 347VAC and 480VAC. Nominal Discharge Current (IN) rating of 5kA or 10kA and an IMAX of 10kA or 20kA. Used heavily in the lighting industry for LED street lighting, roadway lighting, parking/garage lighting, and digital signs. The MPD Series is recommended for total lighting protection. This product is designed to protect all modes, while safely disconnecting itself from the circuit in case of sustained overvoltage conditions, or surge conditions exceeding recommended levels. Can be used in series or parallel with the load allowing the customer versatility.
