Industrial Experience (INEX) CIISE Graduate Student Orientation Session
-My name is Stefanie Corona. I’m the Coordinator of Student Learning and Professional Development as well as the Industrial Experience Graduate Programs at the Institute for Co-operative Education. I’ve been an active member of the INEX team for several years and I’m looking forward to sharing information about this program with you today. Thank you for the invitation.

2. INEX
Opportunity to add value to your academic program by gaining practical experience in a field relevant to your program of study
Available in all Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science MEng excluding Aerospace Engineering and MApCompSc (course-based) programs
Securing a work term is not guaranteed
-The Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science offers this option in collaboration with the Institute for Co-operative Education.
-If you are in the MASc (thesis-based program) in Information Systems Security then you have the opportunity to join Co-op. I will discuss this program later in the presentation. It is not part of INEX. There is no Co-op option for the Quality Systems Engineering MASc.
-In 2017, we made significant changes to this option. If you have visited our website in the past and/or talked to friends about INEX, please make sure you have accurate information by reviewing the updated content on the INEX webpage.

3. INEX versus Co-op
Functions like regular Co-op programs with several exceptions:
It has a different application process
Graduate students obtain 9 academic credits once all work term academic requirements are completed satisfactorily

Apply academic knowledge and theoretical concepts in a practical work environment

Have a competitive edge when you join the workforce full-time 

5. Admission Types
Formal Admission: You are formally accepted in the Fall semester and secure a work term through Co-op i.e. you complete the Career Fundamentals webinars, in-person Work Term Prep Seminar and apply to jobs on COMPASS (our internal database). The application deadline has passed. We are no longer accepting applications for formal admission for work terms in Summer 2019, Fall 2019 or Winter 2020. 
Retroactive Admission: You are not formally accepted in the Fall semester but secure a work term through your own job search. We are currently accepting applications for work terms in Summer 2019 only.
-The next application deadline for formal admission will be in September This will be for work terms in Summer 2020, Fall 2020 and Winter 2021.
-Not all students who apply for formal admission will be accepted which is why we have another application format called retroactive admission.

Advanced registration is required. If you cannot register it is because the registration deadline has passed or registration has reached full capacity (75 students maximum).

8. Eligibility and Policies
Have completed a minimum of 8 credits before the work term begins
You must be classified as having full-time status
Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 throughout your time enrolled in the Industrial Experience option
Students cannot take a leave of absence prior to the work term
Students may complete 1 work term only

9. Eligibility and Policies
Students cannot take a course during the work term
Students will be enrolled by the Co-op office in the ENCS 6931 course (worth 9 academic credits) during the work term
Students can end their degree on a work term, as long as they attend convocation in the following semester

10. Work Term Criteria Paid Minimum 35 hours a week 12 to 17 weeks
If the student is currently working at the company, the internship must be with a different department and supervisor
The student cannot be supervised by a family member. A graduate student must be supervised by an experienced engineer or computer scientist during the work term.
The internship must be in an office setting with a physical address (remote/virtual/home-based company opportunities are not approved)

11. Fees Obliged to pay Co-op fees in addition to regular tuition and fees
Non-refundable
Fees will begin upon admission and the last fee will be charged during the work term
Graduate students pay 4 fees of $185 in addition to their regular tuition and fees including the 9 academic credit course (i.e. 4 x $185 = $740 plus regular tuition and fees including the 9 academic credit course)
-New fee structure for students admitted as of Fall The fee structure is subject to change without notice.
-This is to cover in part the administrative costs particular to Co-op.

-If you are in the MASc (thesis-based program) in Information Systems Security then you have the opportunity to join Co-op. It is not part of INEX so the information I just shared does not apply. There is no Co-op option for the Quality Systems Engineering MASc.
