Día De Los Muertos When we want to address some topics about culture, there is a lot to talk about and teach. That is why, with this presentation, you are going to be challenging your students’ understanding of this vital celebration for Mexican people, which is the famous “Dia de los Muertos”.

This tradition was born out of the mix between ancient Mexican custom of commemorating ancestors and All souls’ Day, a Spanish holiday brought in the colony times. Day of the Dead is a blissful time that helps people remember their dead relatives and rejoice their memory. It is a way to remind themselves that death is a part of life that allows us to appreciate more our time with our family. By making this day special for their deceased relatives, they are making sure they never actually die. Because according to them, death happens when no one remembers you at all. Relatives of the deceased put up a candlelit altar in their homes so spirits can find their home without getting lost. They also place their dead relatives’ favorite things such as : books, food, musical instruments, toys and anything that was precious to them. A good question that can get your students engaged with your presentation is “What items would you like your relatives to place on your altar for them to remember you?” If they don’t know, you can start by answering the question and then encourage them to follow up.

Families go to the graveyard bringing
a huge feast to eat while they polish tombstones, sing together, and talk to their dead family members. Some families might even introduce their babies to their dead ancestors.
