Assignment 3 Questions? Anyone have any questions about assignment 3?

FYI: The Prompt Describe Boyd’s project and argument, and her most important claims. Select texts that connect with Boyd’s. Draw connections between the texts, identifying the range of concerns, assumptions, appeals, and evidence presented. Evaluate the relative persuasiveness of these texts.

1. Timed Writing After you’ve completed RWS 200 and 60 units, you take the WPA, which is a timed writing test. You get two hours to write an essay. The essay determines whether you take 0, 1, or 2 more RWS classes. I want you to do as good as you can.

My Own Credibility 99% GRE Writing Test. 95% SAT Writing Test.
English classes.

WPA Prompt Identify and provide a brief explanation of the author’s argument; identify two persuasive strategies that the author uses to support his or her argument and analyze how those strategies might persuade the reader to support the claim; discuss the assumption(s) on which the argument is based; and evaluate the extent to which the reader would find the argument convincing. Sounds like assignment two, huh?

Template Your Essay Follow They Say/I Say’s lead here. Template yo’ essay. There are “moves” you will make in any essay. Write them and memorize them before you take the test. Think you are an actor in a Broadway play.

Template Your Essay Examples from my GRE tribulations.

Intro/Conclusion For timed writings, do not spend too much time on your introduction. Get in, get out, get confident. Both should be almost fully templated anyway.

Topic Sentences Topic sentences should be fully templated for your timed write.

Time Management Because you’ve templated a part of your essay, you will need less time to revise. Still, always leave time to go back and revise your essay.

Grading Remember, timed writings are graded differently.
They do not spend an hour on each paper like I do. If you have a cogent intro, strong topic sentences, follow the prompt, and answer like you would the RWS 100 prompt, you will dazzle the grader.

Practice Practice timed writing.
It is a skill that you develop. It is not innate.

A Performance! But how do we memorize and recall?

I remember those cheers / They still ring in my ears / After years, they remain in my thoughts.
Go to one night / I took off my robe, and what'd I do? I forgot to wear shorts. I recall every fall / Every hook, every jab / The worst way a guy can get rid of his flab. As you know, my life wasn't drab. Though I'd rather hear you cheer / When I delve into Shakespeare: "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse“ / I haven't had a winner in six months. [cigar] And though I'm no Olivier / If he fought Sugar Ray He would say / That the thing ain't the ring, it's the play. So give me a... stage / Where this bull here can rage And though I could fight / I'd much rather recite ...that's entertainment.

<Insert Meme Here>

Timed Writing Even if you have to take one more after 200, it is 305W, which is a good class. Please prepare and template before you take the WPA.

2. In-Class Writing Do you consider yourself a “digital native” after reading Boyd? Are you better at finding information online than your parents? Why do you think so? In your opinion, which is better and why: Wikipedia or Google?
