The objective – cut emissions at lowest cost through use of a market mechanism The carbon price will be established by: an emissions trading scheme starting on 1July 2012, commencing with a three year fixed price period

The House of Representatives passed the legislation with some amendments last week. The Senate will now consider the bills. Government expects legislation to be passed by the end of 2011. Carbon pricing mechanism to commence on 1 July 2012.

The carbon pricing mechanism will commence on 1July 2012 with a three year fixed price period. The carbon price will start at: $23.00 in 2012-13 $24.15 in 2013-14 $25.40 in 2014-15 Fixed Price Permits: liable entities purchase permits up to emissions levels purchased permits cannot be traded or banked Freely allocated permits can be traded or sold back to the Government but cannot be banked Linked to the Carbon Farming Initiative
