20. The Townspeople and the Old South: the townspeople “knew” but were in denial that Emily had actually killed Homer just as the Confederates were in denial after the Civil War and still continued racist practices long after the war.
Emily and the Old South (Jefferson, Mississippi): Refusal to change and accept that the times have changed. Just as Emily refuses to change with the times and accept that her once prominent family is no longer in existence, so is Jefferson, Mississippi after the war.
