A graph showing the distribution of a population by gender and age.
15
Why Use Population Pyramids?
The data can reveal information about an area’s specific: Population Development Political, Social & Economic Stability It may also be used to forecast problems and solutions.
16
POPULATION PYRAMID The rates of natural increase, births, deaths, infant mortality and life expectancy all affect the population structure of a country. The population structure of a country can be shown by a population or age- sex pyramid.
17
Understanding the Pyramid
Title: Defines the area or group Gender: Males on Left / Females on Right Ages: identified along vertical axis Population Percentage/Number: located along the base of the pyramid Title Population Percentage / Number
18
WHAT IS A POPULATION PYRAMID?
It is a diagram that gives information about the proportion of males and females in each age group. Also shows: - proportion of Toddler (0-4) - proportion of school age people (5 -18) - proportion of working people (19 – 65) - proportion of elderly people (65+)
19
WHAT IS A POPULATION PYRAMID?
Vertical Axis - Age Groups Elderly dependents Working population School Age Toddler Horizontal Axis – Percentage / number
20
A B Population Population Pyramid
1. The birth rate – this is shown by the width of the base. The wider the base of the pyramid the higher the birth rate. 2. The death rate – this is shown by the sides of the pyramid. The more sloping it is the higher the death rate as there are less people in each successive age group. 3. The life expectancy – this is shown by the how high the pyramid reaches and how many people have survived into old age.
21
Types of Pyramids The shape of a pyramid identifies the population’s growth rate.
Population Rapid Growth: Wide base = high birth rate Population Slow Growth: Narrow base = low birth rate Population Negative Growth: Expansive Stationary Constrictive
22
Examples of Population Pyramids
Expansive Population Rapid Growth: Wide base = high birth rate Large percentage of young Reduced percentage of aging Lower Standard of Living Developing countries
23
Examples of Population Pyramids
Stationary Population Slow Growth: Narrow base = low birth rate Almost all age groups the same Reduced percentage oldest age group Developed countries
24
Examples of Population Pyramids
Constrictive Population Negative Growth: Narrow base = low birth rate Reduced percentage of young Developed countries
