CHAPTER 1 The Science of Chemistry 1.3 Matter and Energy
2
A bicycle contains many kinds of matter.
3
Physical forms (phases)
Matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Physical forms (phases) of matter
4
Energy Students don’t have to know what plasma exactly is yet. For now, just explain that it is another state of matter. Lighting is an example of plasma. More on plasma will be covered in later chapters. Whether matter is solid, liquid, or gas depends on how much internal thermal energy is associated with its constituent molecules and atoms
5
Mechanical energy Potential energy Kinetic energy law of conservation of energy: law of nature that states that energy can never be created or destroyed, just converted from one form into another.
6
Energy conversion Thermal energy Chemical energy Electrical energy
Mechanical energy
7
Energy is not created but converted from one form to another.
8
If energy cannot be destroyed,
why are we encouraged to “conserve energy”?
9
What we mean What we say “We use energy by turning on a light.”
10
What we mean What we say “We use one form of energy (electricity) by turning on a light.” “We use energy by turning on a light.”
11
What we mean What we say “We use one form of energy (electricity) by turning on a light.” “We use energy by turning on a light.” “Electric power plants make electrical energy.”
12
What we mean What we say “We use one form of energy (electricity) by turning on a light.” “We use energy by turning on a light.” “Electric power plants convert other forms of energy (solar, nuclear) into electrical energy.” “Electric power plants make electrical energy.”
13
What we mean What we say “We use one form of energy (electricity) by turning on a light.” “We use energy by turning on a light.” “Electric power plants convert other forms of energy (solar, nuclear) into electrical energy.” “Electric power plants make electrical energy.” “We are running out of energy.”

Physical states of matter
law of conservation of energy: - energy can never be created or destroyed - energy can just be converted from one form into another
