1 Welcome to Year 5 Giraffes’ Class Miss Kelly

3 Expectations Year 5 and 6 are the role models in Sandy Lane, therefore we have very high expectations of the children. Behaviour, attitude, presentation, attendance, learning are all very important elements of this year to prepare them for the final year of primary school.

4 English Three strands: Reading (Guided Reading)
Writing (Talk for Writing) SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).

5 Reading Assessed at the end of each term through NFER testing.
Children will engage in exciting, relevant reading lessons every day. In class we use ERIC questions- Explain, Retrieve, Interpret and Choice. Children are encouraged to expanded their answers using APE- Answer it! Prove it! Explain it! It is of vital importance that your child reads at home daily – you have a journal to record this in. Children will have reading targets set, they will aspire to achieve all of them by the end of the year. (target sheets in books)

7 Writing Teacher assessed over the course of the year.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar expectations are high in order to achieve the expected standard in writing Handwriting must be legible and joined unless there is a special requirement. Over the course of the year, the children will engage in some exciting, engaging opportunities for writing. Sandy Lane using the Talk For Writing Approach, a really exciting and engaging way to write! Each child will have individual targets which will be regularly updated throughout the year.

8 SPaG Assessed at the end of each term through NFER testing.
Children will engage in a variety of activities to help them learn their Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Spelling tests will take place each week. Children are expected to use the SPaG that they have learnt in their writing lessons to ensure they hit their targets. Check out your SPaG glossary for an up to date list on the latest terminology! It’s important that your child practices their spellings daily.

9 Maths Assessed at the end of each term through NFER testing.
There will be 3 Maths tests- one arithmetic and two reasoning papers. The three Maths strands are-Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Mental arithmetic forms the basis of Maths, hence why knowing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts is essential. Maths is everywhere-use it! Check out the Maths Glossary provided. Please get your children practising times tables at home 

10 Enquiry Each class focuses on an Enquiry each term or part of a term. The learning is skills-based. The children are encouraged to be independent learners. Year 5 have some exciting and engaging Enquiry Topics ahead of them: Term 1: Lost Worlds Term 2: Could you survive in Space? Term 3: Tudors Term 4: Who has invaded Britain? Term 5: Wild West Term 6: Change

13 Year 5 is all about preparing them for their very special, exciting year in Year 6. We use this year to ensure they are where they need to be (or as close as they can be) to be able to cope with their SATs year. Behaviour is of integral importance. Upper KS2 are the role models of the school therefore much more is expected from them. All children must show their very best selves as much as possible

14 Class Charter Giraffe Class Charter
At the start of the year, Year 5 classes agreed on a Class Charter. This Charter sets the tone for the kind of classroom environment the children wish to be a part of. Ours is up on display on our door  Giraffe Class Charter

15 Rewards and Sanctions Smilies Positive behaviours are rewarded. We reward smiles for all kinds of good behaviour. Certificates will be awarded when children reach their smiley targets. Pebble Jar The Traffic Light system. All children aim to be on Green or above. Gold: Exemplary behaviour displayed Silver: Above the expected, desired behaviour Green: Every child to start on green each day – expected behaviour Amber: Warning (negative behaviour)-take time to think Red: Repeated negative behaviour/serious incident resulting in a consequence -‘Time Out in Class’ Red

17 Physical Education Takes place twice a week
A curriculum requirement-all children must take part. No P.E kit= writing the rules of the sport being taught/going to another class/reading a book. There will be a phone call home if this is a recurring theme.

18 Homework Reading Maths Spellings Project Read Theory (logins available) My Maths Spelling list provided by teacher Based on Enquiry topic Home/School liaison is key at any stage in a child’s educational journey. However the importance of homework cannot be underestimated in year 6. It allows the children time to revise key concepts, it also allows parents/carers an opportunity to keep in contact with their children’s learning. Home learning will be set every Wednesday (starting this week), it will be due on Mondays.

21 Parent Help If you would like to volunteer to help our school trips please contact the office to sort out DBS clearance etc. We will especially need parent helpers for our Cinema trip, please let us know ASAP if you can help us out 
