2 Today’s Goal: Read the magazine article “Trial by Fire,” then analyze an application form for adopting a pet (see handouts). Outcomes: Demonstrate your ability to determine the main point or points in a magazine article. Compare and contrast the character “Zlateh” with the cat “Scarlett” in today’s true story. Analyze a pet adoption application to determine the significance of each question asked.

3 Starter #1: How many of you are cat lovers?
I think you are going to like today’s article, a true story published in People magazine about a heroic cat named “Scarlett.” Turn to today’s first handout, “Trial by Fire.” As a class read aloud, let’s read this together. When we finish reading this article, we will read the article on the back, “Preparing an Application.

4 Starter #2: Now turn to the second handout, the pet application.
Pretend that you are a young adult, living on your own for the first time. Picture your living situation. (This will help you in filling out your application.) Please do the following in this order: 1) Complete the pet application. * Note that the word “reference” means a person who can provide information about you (who can vouch for you). 2) Complete the handout, “Analyzing Pet Applications.”

5 Starter #3: If time permits, let’s discuss . . .
Did you know that pet adoption forms are used not only by rescue organizations, but also by breeders? Let’s look at an actual document used by one dog breeder. As we do this, let’s analyze all of the elements (parts of the document) closely, so we can compare and contrast this document with the application featured with our article. Read the questions on the Horizon application, created by a dog breeder. How does this application compare to the one that was created by a rescue shelter (the one you just filled out)?
