After Lincoln took office, four more states seceded.

5 Although slavery was a major problem between the North and the South, the war was fought to reunite the country.

6 The 1st state to leave the Union was South Carolina.

slave states that remained loyal to the Union were called Border States. They were: Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.

The North sought to blockade Southern ports. Control the Mississippi and thus divide the south in two… and capture Richmond, Virginia.

11 The South’s strategy included fighting a defensive war of attrition to wear down Northern will to fight and gain recognition and supplies from Europe.

19 Bull Run The 1st major battle occurred at Bull Run, Virginia or Manassas Junction as the south would call it. This happened on June 21st, 1861.

22 The bloodiest single day of the war occurred at Antietam Creek in Maryland on September 17th, 1862.

23 Over 4,000 Americans died that day.

Following the Battle of Antietam Creek, Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation… Freeing slaves in those states in rebellion.
