2 Agricultural Changes in Virginia
During the 20th century, agriculture began to change. Mechanization & improvements in transportation changed farming Crop prices were low

3 Changes in Virginia’s Cities
People moved from rural areas (less populated, more agricultural areas) to urban areas (more populated, more industrial areas). Most people moved to urban areas for economic opportunities (job). Technological developments in transportation (roads, railroads, and streetcars) helped cities grow. Coal mining encouraged the growth of Virginia towns and cities as people moved from the countryside to find jobs.

4 Populations Changes During the 20th century, Northern Virginia experienced growth due to an increase in the numbers of federal government jobs located in the region. In the late 20th century & early 21st century, Northern Virginia and the Coastal Plain region have grown due to computer technology. People have moved to Virginia from many other states and countries.

5 The Great Depression Jobs became a major focus during the 20th century. During the 1930’s the US experienced a harsh economic time period known as “The Great Depression.” The Great Depression lasted for about 10 years. Many people lost jobs, money, & many of their belongings.

6 New Deal The federal government started a program called the “New Deal” to help Americans during the Great Depression. This program gave people jobs, food, and other assistance during this tough economic time period.
