Timber cruising is a type of forest inventory, a sample of the population of interest
A forest inventory is a description of the quantity and quality of trees and other organisms that live in the forest and the characteristics of the land on which the forest grows.

3. Organizing Thoughts on Forest Land
Ownerships are the entirety, often discontiguous parcels (a farm’s total, or a Seven Islands’ total)
Lots are singular land areas, usually bounded on a tax map (map 5, lot 2)
Stands are relatively homogeneous groups of trees that are somewhat distinct from neighbors (a management unit)
