1 ANNOUNCEMENTS 2/25/19

2 BLACK HISTORY MINUTE Who Am I?
I am the founder and owner of one of the largest black owned businesses in American history. I was a professional boxer, songwriter, producer, and businessman. I was born November 28, 1929. Through my determination and passion for music, I became a self-made man who helped to create one of the celebrated sounds of modern music. My father, an owner of a grocery store, plastering company, and printing shop taught my siblings and me the value of hard work and family unity. I quit high school to become a professional boxer and won several contests before leaving the profession in 1950. I was drafted into the Army a year later where I earned my high school equivalency diploma. I returned from my military career in Korea in 1953 and opened the 3-D Record Mart, a jazz oriented retail store. I was later forced into bankruptcy and closed my store in 1955. Over the course of a few years I engaged in nightly visits to Detroit’s thriving jazz and R&B scene and became so inspired, I started writing songs. My first song was written for my old boxing colleague Jackie Wilson with the help of my sister Gwen and my friend Billy Davis.

3 BLACK HISTORY MINUTE After writing a few successful hits for my friend Wilson, establishing my own record label and distributing records through a Chicago company, I decided to start my own company. I formed four major companies and one that bears my name. I hired local musicians, writers, and producers, and scored my first and really big hit in 1961 with a local singer named Smokey Robinson’s song called “Shop Around.” By the mid 1960’s I had assembled a wealth of talent, including the Supremes, the Four tops, the Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder. I relocated my record company to Los Angeles where we became one of the top black owned businesses. During the 1970s and 1980s, my company produced motion pictures and more artists like the Jackson Five, the Commodores, Lionel Richie, Rick James, and DeBarge. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988 which brought recognition to my company as a giant in the recording industry who helped transform the sound of popular music. My company’s name is Motown Record Corporation.
