Medieval Europe The empire’s lands were invaded by Magyars, Vikings and Muslims. The feudal system was started to protect from invasion.

Feudalism fief- a piece of land with peasants given by a lord to a vassal. lord- grants fiefs to vassals in exchange for loyalty and service vassal- pledges loyally, military service and taxes in exchange for a fief.

Feudalism A lord could be a vassal to a more powerful lord.
The landowners were called nobles. They provided military service to their lords, and military protection to their vassals.
