2. Essential Questions
What is the difference between simplifying expressions, evaluating expressions, and solving equations?
How do you simplify expressions?

3. Essential Vocabulary Variable – an unknown value
Constant – a known value
Term – a constant, a variable, or a combination joined by multiplication or division
Coefficient – the number in front of the variable
Exponent – the power/degree of the variable
Like Terms – terms containing the same variable with the same exponent

4. Expression – a term or the sum/difference of terms (no equal sign)
Equation – states that two values are equal (contains equal sign)
Simplify – to combine all like terms in an expression (answer may contain numbers and variables)
Evaluate – to find the value of an expression using given values of variable(s) (answer is a number)
Solve – to find the value of a variable in an equation

5. Fraction Review
In upper level math, we are going to begin giving answers as improper fractions. We will rarely use mixed numbers.
When adding and subtracting fractions, find a common denominator.
When multiplying fractions, multiply across the numerators and across the denominators.
When dividing fractions, multiply by the reciprocal.

6. Dividing by Zero 0 1 =0 1 0 =𝑈𝑁𝐷𝐸𝐹𝐼𝑁𝐸𝐷 You cannot divide by zero.
0 1 = =𝑈𝑁𝐷𝐸𝐹𝐼𝑁𝐸𝐷
(Take 6 markers and divide them into 3 groups, 2 groups, 1 group, and 0 groups)

7. Homework Read through syllabus with your parents
Have your parents sign the parent letter and return it tomorrow
