Stations Questions to answer:
You will have 12 minutes at each of the 3 stations. As you go around in the stations, make sure writing dates so you understand the order. You will likely not be learning about events in chronological order. Questions to answer: What was the name of the major battles listed? What was the outcome of the battle (Who won, how many people died, any special strategies used)? How did the battle impact the eventual outcome of the war?

The First Battle of Bull Run is important because it shows the Union that they won’t be able to beat the confederacy as easily as they had expected. As a result, Lincoln decides to adopt a new military strategy. ANACONDA PLAN: just like an anaconda wraps itself around its prey, the north planned to surround the south and push in on the confederacy. The union planned to seize control of the Mississippi River to cut off southern supplies and communications and cut the confederacy in half, then use coastal blockades . BLOCKADE: use of naval power to keep ships from entering or leaving enemy ports

Battle of Antietam

Battle of Gettysburg

Battle of Vicksburg

Sherman’s March to the Sea

Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Grant’s strategy – based on the North’s population advantage. How could/should he use this to win the war? Result: Confederates forced to retreat: Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, VA – April 9th, 1865

Lincoln’s Role in the War
Creates a war machine: Mass production of war supplies Which ones? Expansion of the telegraph network What did he use this for? Constant railroad expansion How did these things help the Union win the war?

Independent Practice Using your notes from today, write a paragraph explaining why you think the North won the war. Your paragraph should have at least four reasons that are fully explained. All the information that you use should come from your notes.

Exit Ticket 1) The Emancipation Proclamation freed: a. All African-Americans. b. Only slaves in the loyal border states. c. All slaves. d. Only slaves in unconquered Confederate states.

Exit Ticket 2) Which of the following best describes Grant’s strategy to defeat the Confederate army? a. “We will try to circle around Lee’s army, then surprise them by attacking them from the rear.” b. “We’ve got more men than they do. For this reason we are going to keep marching against Lee’s army. We’ll force him to fight until he just doesn’t have the men to fight anymore. c. “We’ll wait Lee out. Eventually he’ll have to attack us on our own territory and we’ll crush him.” d. “More than anything else, it is essential that we spare as many lives as possible. I’d rather take three more years to defeat Lee and lose 1000 men, than to defeat him tomorrow having lost 10,000.”

Exit Ticket 3) Which of the following was true of General Robert E. Lee? a. He was not very skilled as a military leader. b. He burned a path from Atlanta to Savannah as he made his famed “march to the sea.” c.
