1 Relative cancer potencies of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in vapour from e-cigarettes compared with tobacco smoke, heat-not-burn devices, a nicotine inhaler and ambient air. Relative cancer potencies of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in vapour from e-cigarettes compared with tobacco smoke, heat-not-burn devices, a nicotine inhaler and ambient air. Values are normalised to the mean potency of the same carcinogens in tobacco smoke. Data sources for e-cigarettes are identified with different symbols (see key for sources). The variable power subset includes all devices used in experiments to create vapour at more than one atomiser power (watts). Solid red lines connect the potencies of emissions for the same device run at different powers with arrows indicating the direction of increasing power. The lines show that the cancer potencies from the same device can vary by more than two orders of magnitude for both formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.
